Instructions for use

Crawling and crawling

Regular crawling

In the normal crawling mode, Screaming Frog SEO Spider will crawl the subdomains you enter and treat all other subdomains encountered by default as external links (shown in Under the "External" tab). In the licensed version of the software, you can adjust the configuration to choose to crawl all subdomains of the website. One of the most common uses of search engine optimization spiders is to find errors on the site, such as broken links, redirects and server errors. In order to better control crawling, please use your website's URI structure, SEO spider configuration options, such as crawling only HTML (images, CSS, JS, etc.), exclude functions, customize robots.txt, include functions or change search The engine optimizes the spider mode and uploads a URI list to crawl.

Grab a subfolder

The SEO Spider tool crawls forward from the subfolder path by default, so if you want to grab a specific subfolder on the site, just enter the URI with the file path. For example, if it is a blog, it might be:, just like our own blog. By typing directly into SEO Spider, it will grab all the URIs contained in the / blog / sub directory.

Crawl the URL list. Crawl the website

by entering the URL and clicking "Start". You can switch to list mode and paste or upload the specific URL list to be crawled. For example, this is especially useful for site migration when auditing redirects.

In the licensed version of the tool, you can save the default crawl configuration and save the configuration configuration file that can be loaded when needed.

1. To save the current configuration as the default value, select "File> Configuration> Save Current Configuration as Default".

2. To save the configuration file so that it can be loaded in the future, click "File> Save As" and adjust the file name (preferably descriptive).

3. To load the configuration file, click "File> Load", and then select your configuration file or "File> Load Recently" to select from the most recent list.

4. To reset to the original Screaming Frog SEO Spider default configuration, choose File> Configuration> Clear Default Configuration.

3.The export function of the top window part of the export works with your current field of view in the top window. Therefore, if you use a filter and click Export, only the data contained in the filtering options will be exported.

There are three main data export methods:

1. Export top-level window data: Just click the "Export" button in the upper left corner to export data from the top-level window tab.

2. Export lower window data (URL information, links, output links, image information): To export these data, just right-click the URL of the data to be exported in the top window, and then click "Export" URL information "," link "," outgoing link "or" picture information ".

3. Batch export: Located under the top menu, it allows batch export of data. You can export all instances of links found in the crawl through the "all in links" option, or you can export all links to URLs with specific status codes (such as 2XX, 3XX, 4XX, or 5XX responses). For example, selecting the "Client Error 4XX in Links" option will export all links to all error pages (eg 404 error pages). You can also export all image alt text, all images are missing alt text and all anchor text.

An expanded overview

Several elements enrich the overview and represent a significant saving of time in the analysis.

Also, a Sitemap section has been integrated into the overwiew and allows you to assess the relevance of the file at a glance. Data crossover is undeniably facilitated.

sitemap analysis integrated into the overview

The enrichment of the overview also concerns hreflang, AMP and pagination thanks to the deployment of post-crawl analyzes, accessible from ‘Crawl Analysis> Configure’. The data collected completes the overview.screaming frog 10.0 includes an AMP section

Unique segmentation elements

To facilitate the analysis of the internal structure of a site, screaming frog provides unpublished times, which facilitate the grouping of data:

The addition of an index, the Internal link score, makes it possible to evaluate the proportion of link received by each URL. The metric link score of Screaming Frog 10

Screaming Frog 10.0 marks the end of manual orphan page inventories: thanks to the Google Search Console and Google Analytics APIs, Screaming Frog is now able to automatically list them.

Thanks to the Indexable segment, the SEO no longer has to cross different information and trick using an Excel spreadsheet to isolate non-indexable pagesNew segment screaming frog assesses indexability

‘Non-200 Pagination URLs’ and ‘Unlinked Pagination URLs’ refine the analysis and make it easier to spot recurring pagination problems.

The expected deployment of visualization

Historically reluctant to visualization, Screaming Frog changes course and launches 4 visualization devices (forced-directed graph, tree structure, cloud of keywords) allowing to take a look at the architecture of a site or the semantics of link anchors.

Operating on an internal browser, the view is modular to allow close-ups on certain URL nodes. The view of the data visualization can be manipulated on click

Thus, all of its updates promise easier analyzes and more user-friendly interfaces. We have to believe that Screaming Frog still has some under the hood: at Search Foresight, we are impatient to test these new features.

Remember for those who land in SEO, the usefulness of a crawler: it is a program (online service, or even "bot") who is asked to browse a link site link to harvest all the data usable in SEO (title, meta, size, number of outgoing links, depth etc). There are a plethora of them, from free to "all inclusive" service where it is better not to have sea urchins in your pockets. Anyway, a crawler is essential if you want to analyze a site.

On the techno and pricing side, there are 2 axes:

  • Desktop solutions, which are traditional applications that you install on your workstation (Screaming Frog is one of them),
  • online solutions, sometimes referred to as "cloud" or "Saas" (Software as a service) solutions.

Screaming Frog SEO Spider is certainly the star of desktop crawlers. Made by an SEO for SEO, it is very popular in the community thanks to its unequaled quality / price ratio.

SEO Spider

95% of the time (this figure may vary from one service provider to another), Screaming Frog will "swallow" any site ... but when given a big project, understand more than 100,000 URLs, the crawler quickly finds itself with the back teeth swimming: interruption of the crawl, slowdowns, crashes, saturated RAM are the most notorious effects. Unlike Saas crawlers, Screaming Frog is dependent on the performance of your machine. It is not "scalable". And the worst is undoubtedly the processing of the data afterwards, in Excel for example, where the slightest operation can take lead. In fact, the first thing to check on Screaming Frog is that the "Pause On High Memory Usage" option is checked (this is the default), just to save and resume the crawl afterwards.

Do not follow nofollow links

Generally speaking, if a link has a nofollow attribute, it is that you do not want to see the target page in search engines. We can therefore without much hesitation uncheck the options relating to nofollow in Configuration> Spider> Basic. This also makes it possible to get closer to “motor vision” (Googlebot). After I must admit that very often I meet publishers associating without any distinction noindex and nofollow with the consequences that we know. It is therefore sometimes necessary to crawl by forcing SF to follow the nofollow history to see if there are no URLs left behind.

Respect for robots.txt

Like the nofollow mentioned just above, we can also ask Screaming Frog to respect the directives of robots.txt. On some projects, the volume of URLs submitted to disallow is sometimes considerable. Take care to uncheck "Show internal URLs Blocked By Robots.txt" in Configuration> Spider> Basic, same for "Ignore Robots.txt". However, I would remind you that this advice applies above all to reduce RAM, but that this kind of option can bring an undeniable advantage in normal times.

Limit the depth of URLs

Sacrilege what an idea! A crawl is only valid if it is complete! Will you tell me ...

Certainly ! Especially during an audit if we want to show the customer that their pages in level 6 and + do not drain any organic traffic, we must harvest them. Except that there are still cases where we can apply this restriction: I have repeatedly worked on "colander" projects that generated URLs in infinite loop, Drupal being my winner in this register. So either we fix (quickly) the problem, or we set a limit, Configuration menu> Spider> Limit. In addition, we are getting closer to a certain "motor vision" because after a while, the indexing robots detect the infinite loops (spider trap) and stop crawling.

This logic can also be adapted to the "Limit number of query strings" option, in other words, the parameters of URLs that pile up endlessly. On sites with a poorly structured URL architecture, it is better to set a limit, especially when it starts in an infinite loop.

Skip the integration of Google Analytics and Search console

Since versions 4 and 5 of Screaming Frog, it is possible to retrieve data from GA and SC thanks to their APIs. This combination of data is undoubtedly excellent and sorely lacking in SF vis-à-vis its competitors "Saas". But on sites with high volumes, we de facto increase the mass of data collected. My advice is therefore to ignore the crawl level, but to recover / associate this data later, in Excel for example (see my tutorial on vlookup and the SEO super combo).

Site segmentation

This is an idea that makes sense, but it is not without consequence. We therefore create several crawls according to the different parts of the site: subdomain, blog, directory, etc. In fact it is a solution of last resort, see utopian. If the site is so large that it has to be segmented, all exports, analyzes, cross-checks, associations, etc. will also be partitioned. Personally, I can't work like that. I need a big picture to get reliable statistics. This does not prevent me from identifying the different themes / parts of the site later to get out of the segmented stats.

When there are several million pages, it has already happened to me, so I head for Saas solutions like Deepcrawl for example. But I find it much less flexible (and more expensive) than with the SF + Excel combo. Everyone has their thing after all.

Also pay attention to the web server resources!

Even if it is a bit off topic, be indulgent with the server of the site that you are going to crawl, especially if it is a sinkhole with URLs! If you do not limit the number of crawled URLs to the second a little, you risk stressing him, or even kneeling him. Prefer the night crawls, and reduce the canopy in Configuration> Speed.
